About our social enterprise

A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

nothing happen without a dream first

Our Guest House is a Social Enterprise paying fair salaries to the staff and donating the entire benefit to support the Children Home of the NGO Kam For Sud (www.kamforsud.org). The children home is situated in the Kathmandu valley and offers love, protection and education to about 60 orphan or abandoned children living in 3 family houses, each house being managed by a couple of nepalese parents. One hectare of organic farmland surrounds the three homes for the self sustainment of the structure.

The Newa Chen Guest House is managed by a young lady who grew educated thanks to a scholarship provided by Kam For Sud. After completing her studies in Business Administration she is now managing this guest house with great involvement and satisfaction: through her efforts in fact, many other needy children can be supported along their life path.

Besides, the Newa Chen Guest House is also a place offering training opportunities to Nepalese youth interested in the hotel management job. Swiss professionals support the training process ensuring a high quality know-how transfer and coaching.

All this can be carried out thanks to the collaboration with the Shrestha family owning the House: Rabindra and Devendra Shrestha inherited the Newa Chen from their father. Their ancestors' house was first turned into a Guest House in 2006, when the UNESCO identified the property as one the most beautiful and well preserved private houses of Patan. After 15 years of a family management, the Newa Chen Guest House is now run as a social enterprise where the owner family, the non profit company and the NGO cooperate combining tourism with childhood protection and heritage preservation.

Meet the people behind Newa Chen

Shanti

"I was born in the district of Nuwakot, in a farmers family, the fourth out of six girls. Unfortunately I became orphan at the age of seven. Supported by the NGO Kam For Sud, I grew up in a children home and later I could complete my studies at the Business Management faculty. My first job was in a consultant office, I was happy to be able to earn a small salary for myself and for supporting my sisters. Suddenly my life changed in a unexpected and fantastic way when I got the opportunity to work at the Newa Chen. Working at this guest house gives me a great satisfaction and happiness: in fact, it is a non-profit enterprise, its whole benefit is going to help other needy orphan, supporting them financially. This is a big motivation for me to work here and I really feel very happy"

Anil

"I grew up at the Tathali children-home from the age of eight. I feel so lucky to have a family like Tathali's, because thanks to it, my childhood was happy in spite of the difficult initial situation of my life. Now I am very grateful to have this opportunity to work with Kam For Sud at the Newa Chen Guest House. It was my dream to become a cook, and here I’m, the kitchen chef of the Newa Chen, proud to have this responsibility and to contribute to the success of this social enterprise. I wish to tell once more: thank you Kam For Sud family!"

The owners

"The Newa Chen is the home of our ancestors, it was restored thanks to a Unesco project because of its historical value. Silvia and Rajan came to us one day with the dream of creating a social enterprise. Usually, charity organisations in Nepal work only thanks to foreign donations, so this concept of self-sustainment immediately stroke us as a powerful idea that we liked very much. We think it is a valuable initiative, very important for our country. If this idea works, it will give a very positive message to all charity organizations of Nepal. For this reason, we are very motivated to collaborate with Kam For Sud for the success of the social enterprise Newa Chen"

Rabindra and Devendra Shrestha, owner of Newa Chen
